Harnessing Her Nerve Center

Posted in Design, Low Voltage System at 3:53 am by Administrator

Over the last two days I have been designing and building a suitable wiring harness for Evie. So far I have Designed the harness, Designed and assisted in welding a bracket for the 12 V accessory battery. Installed the bracket, Installed headlamps, installed taillights, figured out how to make the parking lights, headlights, taillights, directional lights, brake lights, and marker lights all work. I also now have a license plate light. Jim Cullen (you all remember Jim Cullen, from Ed Begley’s Bradley) Jim told me the proper way to glass the top to the body. I have to move the brake reservoir, it was originally mounted in a very inaccessible spot. Oh and I almost forgot, I charged the batteries to full and drove Evie around the block… Wow!!! This little car has some pep. I will be posting more pictures soon. Thank you for reading

Wow, so many lights. I did not realize there were so many. I just get in my car and take advantage as a convenience. How much electricity will each light use? Are the lights you are using specifically for electric cars (most efficient lights) or do regular ones work and not drain your batteries? Are all these lights hooked to one of the batteries or do all the batteries work together for the “whole” car? Now that I’m thinking about it, what about the console lights? Will they require as much work in design and installation?

    Keep on pluggin’,

Belia, Thank you for your interest in Evie and electric cars. To answer your questions…
I will be using both incandescent and LED lighting. The LED uses less current, therefore will not draw as much from the batteries. for the headlights I will be using Halogens. There is a 12V battery which is used exclusively for the accessories, it is charged by a DC to DC converter which pulls from the pack evenly and provides electricity to the accessory battery much like an alternator in an ICE vehicle would. The instrument panel lighting harness will have to be designed as well, it will feed of of the light switch.

Don’t write me off yet! The BugE is about 2 months away from being complete. After that, it’s back to the Bradley!
